OUR JOURNEY

A Legacy of Security Excellence

April 5, 1989

The Incident That Started It All

A major marijuana find on an Air Jamaica aircraft triggered serious threats to the airline's continued operations, with large fines and seizures levied by U.S. Customs. The incident exposed critical vulnerabilities in Jamaica's port and aviation security and placed the nation's economy and tourism industry under immediate threat.

April 19, 1989

The Prime Minister Acts

The Prime Minister summoned an urgent meeting attended by the Minister of Information, Minister of Public Utilities & Transport, Minister of National Security, the Commissioner of Police, the Chief of Staff of the JDF, and senior permanent secretaries. The meeting resolved to immediately deploy JDF and JCF to the ports, and to establish an Elite Security Corps — a body of men and women trained to function in a paramilitary capacity — within three months.
